DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE (10/24/2017)

Good afternoon

I would like to say THANK YOU to EVERYONE for your part during the Lake Murray Tournament. By far, this was the largest tournament to date. A total of 81 boats were registered with 79 actually fishing.  The trail is growing and that makes me excited.

Thanks for all the support as I strive to do my best for the student anglers.

As always, I look for ways to improve the trail after each tournament simply to make the next tournament even better with less headaches, therefore a few areas that needs improvement beginning with the upcoming
Wateree - Clear Water Cove Tournament on Saturday, November 4, 2017.

#1. Boat Prep Line- This time should be used in preparing the boat to be launched.  At Murray, I notice a delay in line movement as a few trucks had to pull out of line as the boat ahead was either not ready to move forward or student anglers sitting and standing around boat adding line to their reels and tying on lures.

#2. Boat Captains please remember to cut off your head lights when on the ramp. This will eliminate issues with the next truck backing down the boat ramp especially when there are 2 or more boat ramps.

#3 Flight Staging Areas - EACH Boat had a specific colored numbered boat float that corresponded to the staging map that was emailed for last weekend's  Lake Murray Tournament. This was the first time we used this format which went OK, but Flight #1, Boat #1 - #25 was out of sync and caused some confusion.  Not complaints, just need to review this again as going forward, we will continue to use staging area's to make blast off safer &  quicker.

Beginning with Wateree tournament, each boat will also be given a large paper number sign as well to help boat captains get in line and be ready to blast off. This paper sign can be trashed if need be as I have plenty for each tournament.

#4. Boat Number Float - ALL boats will have a numbered boat float on board and this float MUST be turned into the person on the dock at check in.  This is very CRITICAL as it ensures me every one is accounted for. NO ONE is to have their boat float turned in by another boat.

Going forward, the check in person will wear a safety vest so that everyone can identify him on the dock and the check in location will be identified BEFORE blast off.  This eliminate confusion at the end of the tournament.

#5. Weigh In-  Student Anglers should collect their fish and get to the water tanks quickly as possible as our goal is to release ALL fish. Air stones will be used going forward to help put oxygen in the bags of water.

Beginning with Wateree tournament, plastic bags will NO LONGER be used to weigh in the fish. I have ordered plastic baskets which will sit on the scales. AFTER weigh in, we will quickly take photos and get these fish bag in a bag or water and quickly get them released.

Student Anglers are not to walk around with live fish in their hands as this causes stress and potential killing the fish.

Lake Murray was a GREAT tournament but if we all work together, we can fix the issue's listed above so that ALL tournament's will be BIGGER and BETTER.

School Team Coaches and Boat Captains, please share this info with all your team mates.

Thanks Agian to EVERYONE!!

See you at Wateree!!!

NEWSLETTER 9/8/2017 - SC B.A.S.S. NATION YOUTH DIRECTOR

From the desk of Randy Vaughn,

South Carolina B.A.S.S. Nation Youth Director.

It is amazing that we are already putting together plans for another great year of High School and Jr. B.A.S.S. fishing. It was only about eight weeks ago that the B.A.S.S. Nation High School and Jr. Nationals were held. We sent ten teams total and brought home first place in the High School division, with several of our talented Junior and High School teams placing in the Nation’s top ten. Congratulations again to anglers J.R. Floyd and James Gibbons, with Captain Tommy Floyd and South Florence High School coach Jeremy Trussell, for representing our state so well. Thanks to a lot of great support, our state’s youth program is considered by some as one of the premier programs in the country. Each year the membership has grown and this year will be no different as we hold tournaments from the mountains to the sea; from the pristine crystal clear water of our upstate lakes, to the brackish and sometimes tricky tidal fishing of our coastal rivers. In short, we have it all. This year we offer the Palmetto Boat Center (PBC) High School trail predominately fishing the upstate; the newly formed Lower State Fishing Trail, fishing from the midlands of South Carolina to the Santee River system. Also, if your kids are interested in salt water fishing then there’s the SALT trail. Each trail agenda is set up by their own exclusive board of directors and I am proud to say that the PBC and the newly formed LSBT are B.A.S.S Nation sanctioned and its anglers, being members of the B.A.S.S. Nation, will be eligible to attend/compete in this year’s South Carolina B.A.S.S. Nation High School and Jr. State championships. The top two placing teams will then be eligible to advance to the BASS Nationals to be held in late summer 2018 on a lake yet to be determined.

To see how to start a new High School or Jr. team, please go online at www.Bassmaster.com. Next click on Nation and scroll down to High school or Jr., to find all of the information there. If you do not see what you are looking for please email me at randyvaughn411@gmail.com.

The available trails are:

Palmetto Boat Center High School trail at    http://www.palmettoboatcenter.com/read-more-about-tournaments.

Lower State High School Trail at http://www.sctournamenttrail.com or contract trail director Tony Gray at tlgray003@aol.com.

Salt Trail information can be found by contacting Rayburn Polson at RPoston@horrycountyschools.net. NOTE: spots for this trail are limited and this trail is NOT BASS sanctioned to qualify for the BASS Nationals championship.

Each trail has their different rules and guidelines, associated participation fees, and tournament fees. Please see the individual trails for details.

The South Carolina B.A.S.S. Federation Nation has never in the past charged a fee for belonging to and aligning your individual school team/members to be a member of the S.C. Bassmaster Federation Nation. However, the board of directors have instructed me that this year there will need to be a charge for affiliating with the State as is stated clearly in the B.A.S.S. Nation Club Rules and guidelines. I can assure you that we have exhausted all means possible (and will continue) to keep cost to a minimum. The fees for each individual student is $20.00 for the year, due upon entering your newly updated roster into BASS High School or Junior Bass in September.  To make things easier, here is a breakdown of what is required for each student:

*Make check payable to S.C. B.A.S.S. Federation

Total cost is $40.00 for High School angler and $30.00 for Jr. Angler to be a member in good standings. After we have received the $20.00 per angler, I will go online and make sure you are upgraded to be a member in good standing with the S.C. BASS Nation.

The SC BASS Nation High School State Championship will be held again on Lake Murray April 7th 2018, so please put that date on your fishing calendar. Entry this year will be $20.00 per team of 2 anglers. The Junior State championship is yet to be announced but there will be a State championship held for these kids as well. The cut off for adding a team to the S.C. BASS Nation State Championship will be March 24th 2018.

If you and your school are currently enrolled in the 2016-17 roster, your membership is good until December 31, 2017. If you are new to the program and will be fishing one of the trails, you must be in good standing with BASS and listed on the team’s roster for your points to count in team trail standings for advancement to the B.A.S.S. High School or Junior Nationals.

Please send all questions to me and I will answer you as I receive them. More info about this will be coming the first of January.

NEW DIRECTIONS -2017-2018

NEW DIRECTIONS - 2017-2018

FROM: RANDY VAUGHN - SC Youth Director - BASSMASTER

Hello, my name is Randy Vaughn and I am the South Carolina Youth Director for Bassmaster.
I have some very exciting news to share but first… I would like to share with everyone the path to what has become one the fastest growing sport in America…
High School Bass Fishing.

In 1968 Ray Scott founded the first organized competitive Bass Fishing trail bringing together men from all across the country that shared a passion for Bass Fishing and the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society was formed. The first tournament trail began and the results and the latest fishing trends were then shared through the newest outdoors publication, the Bassmaster Magazine.

In 1991, Ray wanted to get more youth involved in fishing so he introduced to American the Bassmaster casting kids. This program gave boys and girls the opportunity to learn the basics of casting, pitching, flipping and to be introduced to general fishing technics. As a result of the country wide casting kid’s competition drew major sponsorship and tens of thousands of dollars in college tuitions were given to the highest placing competitors at the national competitions.

In February 2006, the first Bassmaster Jr Championship was held as a kick off to the BassMaster Classic to be held the following week in Florida. The Jr Championship was held on Harris Chain of Lakes bringing Bassmaster Jr state champions together for a national championship tournament. The program has continued to grow and has since evolved into the program that we have today.

It is clearly evident from the growth of High School bass fishing that the impact of High School bass fishing is for real in the state of South Carolina. The numbers of participating students, both male and female, have shown steady and rapid growth and the commitment of schools, principals, advisors, boat captains, and parents for these young men and ladies  has evolved into what was once a weekend hobby into a passion that very few can explain unless you have been a part of it. I have been told wonderful success stories about commitment to not only fishing but to succeed in school and keep their grades up so they might remain on the fishing team. Folks this is amazing stuff.

To continue growth in the state from the midlands to the coast, it is my pleasure, as the BASS Nation Youth Director, to announce the NEW LOWER STATE B.A.S.S. TOURNAMNET TRAIL.

Under the Leadership and direction of Tony Gray, the Lower State Tournament Trail which will be sanctioned by B.A.S.S.,  will be able to advance the trails qualifying teams to the BASS NATION High School National Championship, and to participate in the S.C State BASS Nation Championship held each year.

With the help from Sponsors like Marshall’s Marine, Palmetto State Armory Fishing Outpost, SKEETER Boats, Hydra Fishing aka AlX Rods,Cinnettic Reels, TreeShaker Tackle, Dirty Band Outdoors, Consolidated Pipe & Supply, R L Culler Refrigeration and JC’s Outdoors, I look forward to the growth of high School Fishing in the lower state of South Carolina.

Now, I would like to welcome aboard everyone to a great new chapter in Youth BASS Fishing in South Carolina.
